TENURE TRACK FACULTY POSITION IN THE DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES
The Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke (http://www.usherbrooke.ca/dep-microbiologie/) invites applications for a tenure-track Faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in microbiology. Applications should be received before March 31st, 2024 to be considered.
We seek a microbiologist with expertise in biological sciences, particularly in microbiology and/or virology and ideally with a solid knowledge of bioinformatics and metagenomic data analyzes (microbiome / virome). Although related and relevant topics will also be considered, the research interests of the selected candidate should ideally fall within the fields of the microbiome (bacteria, fungi) and/or the virome (eukaryotic viruses and bacteriophages) in relation to susceptibility to infections by different microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi); expression of host genes (transcriptomics), metabolism/nutrition, neurodegeneration (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s), degeneration of the immune system (associated with the increase in or loss of effectiveness of vaccination or anticancer treatments), interventional approaches aimed at modifying the microbiome (e.g. prebiotics, probiotics and/or fecal transplantation, phage therapy, exercise). The methodological aspects can be varied (bioinformatics approaches, deep learning and machine learning, predictive models, imaging, transcriptomics, etc.). Future research could involve animal models and/or ideally patient cohorts linked to clinical research at the Center for Research on Aging (CdRV). Candidates must hold a PhD and/or MD degree and at least two years of postdoctoral training with excellent publication record.
The successful candidate will join 22 clinical and fundamental microbiologists at the department of microbiology, as well as 10 RNA biologists in the Sherbrooke RNA group. The candidate will also join an emerging research team working on the microbiome/virome and antimicrobial resistance. The research facility will be part of a brand new building: the precision health and translational research pavilion. Being located on the health campus, next to the university hospital and clinical research center, our research environment is ideal to conduct projects involving clinical samples and patients. Our researchers have access to multiple technological platforms in RNomics, sequencing, digital PCR, mass spectrometry, microscopy and imaging, as well as state-of-the-art animal facilities. The Université de Sherbrooke has also built a critical mass of expertise in RNA biology (small RNAs, telomerase, splicing) and cancer (colorectal, breast and ovarian), leading to the development of a dynamic academic and technical infrastructure (e.g. RiboClub, www.riboclub.org, a RNomics platform, https://rnomics.med.usherbrooke.ca, and a
Cancer research axis, http://cr.chus.qc.ca/axes/cancer/). Candidates whose research program involves pathogens will have access to a state-of-the-art BSL-3 facility to be built in a new research building. The successful applicant will be given generous startup funds and offered a mentoring program to connect them to both local, national and international resources. Possibilities of creating collaborations across the faculty and university also exist since research projects in bacteriology and virology are also conducted in the Department of Biochemistry (https://www.usherbrooke.ca/dep-biochimie/) and Biology (Faculty of Sciences, https://www.usherbrooke.ca/biologie/).
The successful candidate is expected to maintain a competitive externally funded research program and participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Candidate should have working knowledge of French or commitment to learn French within the first 5 years of their appointment.
